Does WhatsApp work in China?

It does not — and the reason it works for the person sitting next to you has a simple explanation.

The short answer

No. WhatsApp does not work on a normal internet connection in mainland China. Messages sit on one grey tick, calls never connect, and photos stall at zero percent.

This is not your phone, your carrier, or the hotel's router. WhatsApp has been blocked nationwide since 2017, and the block covers every network you are likely to use inside the country: hotel Wi-Fi, café Wi-Fi, a Chinese SIM, and the free airport Wi-Fi.

Why it sometimes appears to work for a few minutes

Two situations confuse people, and both have ordinary explanations.

The first is international roaming. If you keep your home SIM and use its data plan, your traffic is routed back to your home carrier's network before it reaches the internet — so it is not filtered the same way. This genuinely works, and it is why one traveller swears WhatsApp is fine while the person next to them cannot send a message. It also gets expensive fast, and the moment you connect to Wi-Fi to save money, WhatsApp stops.

The second is that a block is not a wall with a switch. Some requests slip through briefly, so you may see a message send once and then nothing for the next hour. That is normal behaviour for filtering at this scale, not a sign that it is about to start working.

What else is blocked alongside it

If WhatsApp is unreachable, expect the same from everything in this list. They are blocked by the same mechanism, so a fix for one is a fix for all of them.

  • —Messaging: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Telegram, Line
  • —Google: Gmail, Drive, Maps, Google Search, Play Store, and Google sign-in on third-party sites
  • —Social: Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, Reddit, Snapchat
  • —Work tools: Slack and Notion are unreliable; Google Workspace is effectively unusable
  • —News: most Western outlets, including the BBC, Reuters and the New York Times

Google sign-in being blocked catches people out more than anything else on this list. If you use "Sign in with Google" for your airline, hotel or bank app, you can be locked out of the account itself — not just Google. Set a password on those accounts before you travel.

What Chinese people use instead

WeChat, and it is not optional. It is the messaging app, the payment method, the way you order food, the way you scan a menu, and often how a hotel or a driver contacts you. Install it before you arrive and, if you can, get a friend to verify your account — new accounts sometimes need an existing user to vouch for them, which is awkward to arrange once you have landed.

WeChat is not a replacement for WhatsApp for talking to people at home, though. Everyone you know would have to install it too.

How to keep WhatsApp working

A VPN routes your traffic through a server outside mainland China, so WhatsApp behaves exactly as it does at home. That part is straightforward. The part people get wrong is the timing.

Set it up before you fly. Most VPN websites are unreachable from inside China, and the Chinese App Store does not list VPN apps at all — so the obvious fix is itself blocked once you are there. Install the app, sign in, and connect once while you are still on a normal connection. That last step matters: it confirms your account works, rather than leaving you to discover a problem at 1am in a Shanghai hotel.

  • —Install the app and sign in before departure
  • —Connect once at home to confirm it works end to end
  • —Set a password on any account where you normally use "Sign in with Google"
  • —Install WeChat and add your payment card while you are still on a normal connection

Will a free VPN do?

Generally not, for a specific reason rather than snobbery. Free services concentrate a lot of users onto a small number of well-known servers, and those are the first ones to be identified and blocked. A free VPN that worked in China last month frequently does not this month.

The other issue is that a free service has to make money somehow, and for a VPN the product on offer is your browsing. If you are going to route your work email and your bank through something, that trade is worth thinking about.
