Does Telegram work in China?

Getting Telegram to connect is the easy part. Keeping it connected, and keeping access to your account, are the parts most guides skip.

The short answer

No. Telegram has been blocked in mainland China since 2015. On hotel Wi-Fi or a Chinese SIM card it sits on "Connecting…" forever. Hong Kong and Macau are not affected.

A roaming home SIM, a travel eSIM that routes data outside the mainland, or a VPN installed before you arrive will all get it working.

Why it gets stuck on "Connecting…" even with a VPN

Most apps open a connection, fetch what they need and close it. Telegram keeps one connection open the whole time so messages arrive instantly. In China, long-lived connections are exactly what gets disrupted: a line that loads web pages perfectly can still have its long connections cut every few minutes, and each cut sends Telegram back to "Connecting…".

So if web browsing works but Telegram keeps reconnecting, it is usually the line, not your account. Switching to a different server often fixes it immediately.

DopeVpn sends Telegram over its most stable lines automatically, rather than whichever line tested fastest — fast lines are not always the ones that hold a connection for hours.

Make sure you can still log in

Telegram sends login codes to your other logged-in devices first, and by SMS second. SMS to a foreign number in China is not reliable, so being logged out there can be hard to fix. Before you go:

  • —Stay logged in on your phone, and log in on a laptop too as a second device
  • —Turn on two-step verification (a cloud password) in Privacy and Security
  • —Add a recovery email to that password
  • —Do not log out to "test" anything once you are there

Telegram's built-in proxy setting

Telegram has its own proxy setting (Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy). With a VPN app connected you do not need it: leave it off, or on Telegram Desktop leave it on "Use system proxy". Turning on a random free proxy from a channel is a common way to end up with a slow, unreliable connection.

Messaging apps that work in China

WeChat is what everyone in China uses, and it works without a VPN. For WhatsApp, see Does WhatsApp work in China?
