Does Discord work in China?

Getting Discord to load is the easy part. Keeping voice chat clear is where most people run into trouble.

The short answer

No. Discord is blocked in mainland China — the app sits on a loading screen on hotel Wi-Fi or a Chinese SIM card. Hong Kong and Macau are not affected.

A roaming home SIM, a travel eSIM that routes data outside the mainland, or a VPN installed before you arrive will get it working.

Text works but voice cuts out

Text chat is forgiving: a message that takes an extra second to send still arrives. Voice and video are not — they need a steady connection, and short drops that you would never notice while browsing turn into robotic audio or a disconnected call.

If text works and voice keeps breaking up, it is the line rather than Discord. Switch to a server in Hong Kong, Japan or Korea — the closest regions have the least delay — and avoid the evening peak (roughly 8–11pm Beijing time) for long calls if you can.

Before you travel

  • —Install your VPN and sign in on every device — VPN websites and app-store listings are not reachable from inside mainland China
  • —Log in to Discord on your phone and computer at home; new-location logins can trigger an email check
  • —Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app
  • —If you use Discord for games, check that the games themselves are reachable — some game servers are blocked separately

Check other apps

Not sure about another app or site? Try our is-it-blocked checker, or see Telegram in China for another app that depends on a steady connection.
