Does Instagram work in China?

Facebook and the other Meta apps included — what stops working, how people still post, and how to keep your account from being flagged. For messaging, see Does WhatsApp work in China?

The short answer

No. Instagram has been blocked in mainland China since 2014, and Facebook since 2009. On hotel Wi-Fi or a Chinese SIM card the apps open but nothing loads. Hong Kong and Macau are not affected.

People who keep posting from China do it in one of three ways: roaming on their home SIM, a travel eSIM that routes data outside the mainland, or a VPN they installed before they arrived.

What it looks like

  • —The feed shows "Couldn't refresh feed" or stays on old posts
  • —Stories and Reels sit on "Posting…" and eventually fail
  • —Direct messages do not send or arrive
  • —Logging in for the first time on a new phone fails outright

Roaming, eSIMs and VPNs

Roaming data goes back through your home carrier, so Instagram usually works — at roaming prices, and only on your phone.

Many travel eSIMs for China route traffic through Hong Kong or another country, which has the same effect. Check how yours works before relying on it.

A VPN works on any connection, including hotel Wi-Fi, but you cannot download one once you are inside: VPN websites and app-store listings are not reachable from mainland China.

Do not get locked out of your account

The bigger risk on a China trip is not the block itself but Instagram deciding your login looks suspicious. Logins from a new country, or from an address that keeps changing country, are exactly what its security checks look for. A few minutes at home avoids most of it:

  • —Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, not SMS — a foreign SIM may not receive texts in China
  • —Log in on your phone before you leave and stay logged in
  • —Pick one VPN location and stick to it, rather than hopping between countries
  • —Save your backup codes somewhere offline

If Instagram asks you to confirm it is you, do it from the same VPN location you have been using — switching countries mid-check makes it more likely to escalate.

What people in China use instead

WeChat for messaging and Moments, Xiaohongshu (RedNote) for travel and lifestyle posts, and Douyin for short video.

If you only need to stay in touch, WeChat is the one worth setting up before you go — it is on the checklist before you fly.
