Does Google Maps work in China?
Short version: it is blocked, and even when you get it working it is the wrong map for China. Here is what to use instead.
The short answer
Google Maps is blocked in mainland China along with the rest of Google (more on Google). A VPN or a routed eSIM will make it load, but it is not a good map for China even then — this is one of the few cases where the answer is to use something else rather than to get the blocked app working.
Why Google Maps falls short in China
- —Detail is thin: many shops, restaurants and newer roads are missing or out of date
- —The blue dot showing where you are can sit noticeably off the street you are actually on
- —Public transport directions are patchy, and there is no Street View
What works better
Apple Maps on an iPhone works in China without a VPN and uses local map data, including public transport. For most visitors with an iPhone it is the simplest choice.
Locals use Amap (Gaode) and Baidu Maps. Both are excellent but largely in Chinese; they are worth installing if you can read some Chinese or do not mind copying addresses.
For taxis, DiDi is the main ride-hailing app and has an English version.
Before you go
- —Save your hotel's address in Chinese characters — showing it to a driver beats any pronunciation
- —Add hotel and key places to your map app's favourites at home
- —Set up DiDi and a payment method before you need a taxi in a hurry
- —If you will use Google Maps anyway, sign in to Google at home so its security checks do not lock you out
For everything else Google
