eSIM or VPN for China?

A routed eSIM gets around the blocks on its own — on mobile data, on your phone. Here is exactly where it stops covering you, and where a VPN does not either.

Why an eSIM can work without a VPN

Many travel eSIMs sold for China do not hand your traffic to the internet inside China. They route it through a network in Hong Kong or another country first, the same way roaming on your home SIM does. Because your connection leaves the mainland before it reaches the internet, Google, WhatsApp and Instagram simply work.

Not every China eSIM works this way — some use a local Chinese connection, and then everything is blocked as usual. Check how the one you are buying routes data, and test it as soon as you land.

What an eSIM does not cover

  • —Hotel and café Wi-Fi. The moment your phone joins Wi-Fi, it stops using the eSIM for data, and Wi-Fi in China is blocked like everything else. You have to turn Wi-Fi off to stay on the eSIM
  • —Your laptop, unless you share the phone's connection as a hotspot — which uses up the eSIM's data quickly
  • —Large amounts of data. eSIM plans are priced per gigabyte; video calls and streaming over a long trip add up
  • —ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, if your eSIM comes out in Hong Kong — none of the three serves Hong Kong, so you get a region error even though everything else works

What a VPN does not cover

  • —It has to be installed before you arrive — VPN websites and app-store listings are not reachable from inside mainland China
  • —Connections can be disrupted, especially in the evening; a good service switches lines for you, but no VPN works 100% of the time in China
  • —It needs a working internet connection underneath it — a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi

So which one?

For a short trip where you mostly use your phone on mobile data, a routed eSIM alone can be enough. For longer stays, laptops, heavy data use, hotel Wi-Fi or AI tools, a VPN covers what the eSIM does not.

Plenty of travellers use both: the eSIM for data on the go, a VPN for Wi-Fi, laptops and ChatGPT — and each as the other's backup if one has a bad day.

If you rely on ChatGPT or Claude for work, test them over your eSIM before you fly. A Hong Kong exit is the most common reason they fail while everything else works.
